Discover the Virgin Mary Axion Estin of Emmaus icon
This large icon, enshrined at St. Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, is modeled on the original Axion Estin icon of Mount Athos. The hymn "More honorable than the cherubim..." was first sung in AD 982 by Archangel Gabriel. The icon was painted by Protodeacon Paul Drozdowski in 2018. It features the main inscription in four languages: Greek, Church Slavonic, Arabic, and English.

- Saints: Six Holy Hierarchs of America surround the Theotokos and the Lord Jesus. They include Tikhon of Moscow, Raphael of Brooklyn, Innocent of Moscow, Mardarije of Libertyville, John of San Francisco, and Nikolaj of Žiča. All served in America, with several in Pennsylvania.
Historical Significance
The original Axion Estin icon is kept in the apse of the Protaton Church in Karyes, Mount Athos. The hymn has been sung in the Divine Liturgy of the Orthodox Church ever since. This icon is a beautiful representation of faith and history.
